Stone Cold Touch - Jennifer L. Armentrout
We're continuing our adventure through JLA's Dark Elements series! Check out my review of book 1, White Hot Kiss, here.
Every touch has its price.
Layla Shaw is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life—no easy task for a seventeen-year-old who’s pretty sure things can’t get worse. Her impossibly gorgeous best friend, Zayne, is forever off-limits thanks to the mysterious powers of her soul-stealing kiss. The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could.
But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Because suddenly Layla’s powers begin to evolve, and she’s offered a tantalizing taste of what has always been forbidden. Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She’s finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay…
Holy tension Batman. This book really brought it and I loved it even more than White Hot Kiss! Most sequels suffer from "middle book syndrome" and struggle, but this one was engaging, kept the sotry going without feeling forced, and left you wanting more.
The plot starts to get juicy, the characters start to blossom, and we get more delicious tension in our favorite love triangle. I don't enjoy love triangles where one of the love interests is the obvious choice over the other. White Hot Kiss felt a bit like that once Roth was introduced, but this book reigned it back in and put Zayne back in the mix. I loved it!
Whereas I wanted to smack Zayne in White Hot Kiss, Roth is about to get slapped in this one. However... I'm still team Roth all the way. He seems more suited to who Layla is becoming as a woman, versus Zayne who still sometimes (read: a lot of times) treats Layla like the little girl he grew up with.
Layla is growing into herself more in this one and I enjoy seeing her character develop. She's becoming more confident and badass and I'm here for it!
AS the Queen of Cliffhangers, Jennifer certainly earned that title with this one. It left me feeling unresolved and frantic to know what happens next. Let me just say... I am extremely grateful I did not read this series as they were published. I can't wait to start the next one and see how we go from here!
Have you read these? Which team are you on: Roth or Zayne? Let me know in the comments!
