Rise of the Witch - C. Rochelle

What do you get when you combine Slavic folklore, reverse harem, a powerful witch, sassy men, and a sentient forest? Book 1 of the Yaga's Riders series by C. Rochelle!

As with most beginnings, it started with death.

When I had nothing left to lose, I traveled to the hut in the woods; the one no one dared approach. The witch who lived there recognized the darkness in my soul and took me under her wing—to witness her reign of terror firsthand and eventually, to inherit her legacy as my own.

Now I’m the monster they fear; the one humans avoid at all costs. In this welcome isolation, I've attempted to forget my past and the future that was taken from me.

Until three men appear, somehow able to break through my protective wards and see me in my true form. While resistant to their intrusion, I recognize they may be the ones I’ve been waiting for—the ones I need to ascend to my full power.

Too bad I would rather grind their bones than invite them in.

But something is mysteriously devouring the forest, and I suspect the threat may be the same one I barely escaped many moons ago. If it is, he will find me a more worthy opponent than the last time we met.

I am the Yaga and I may be broken, but my edges are sharp.

The Yaga’s Riders is based on the folklore of Baba Yaga, with creative liberties taken.

The Rise of the Witch is the first book in a steamy, paranormal romance saga featuring alphaholes, mysterious forces in magical woods, and a slightly frightening heroine who never has to choose just one man. This book features M/MFM romance, and multiple POV's.

Content Warning:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I absolutely loved this book! What are words ugh. I picked this book up at the suggestion of my Cult friends (Scarlett St. Clair's street team) and promptly devoured it in one sitting. I will preface that I read this back in March and I'm trash for only just now getting around to actually writing down my feelings.

But let's go!

This book is phenomenal! I love the unique premise of a Baba Yaga retelling mixed with my favorite fated mates trope! *chefs kiss* perfection! World building is hard, especially when you're using folklore and mythology to build it, but C. Rochelle just did it perfectly. The world was robust, and unfamiliar terms were explained in such a natural way and never felt forced.

The characters were realistic and flawed and relatable. Each of the guys, as well as Vasi had their own voices and their own issues and it was just amazing how easily it transitioned from one POV to another. Honestly, in RH books, I usually have a favorite by now... and I just can't choose my favorite of these boys!

The spice in this book was delicious and so well written. Sex magic?? Sign me up. I'm not saying that spicy scenes have to have a purpose, but the way C. Rochelle gave the spicy scenes a dual purpose was genius and I love it!

The cliffhanger was heartbreaking and I am immensely glad I just got into this series a few months ago and don't have to wait too long for the next one!

If you’re a fan of witches, folklore retelling, and spice, this series is a must read—especially for those RH fans! Book 2 releases June 27, 2021! So you have plenty of time to catch up!
