Chaos & Cocks Podcast: Pride Edition

The latest episode of our podcast is live, and as promised, we've compiled a lil description and notes of some of the more important madness we talked about!

But first, a word from our podcasters:

We swear we tried to follow an agenda, but you cannot make us conform to a strict script! Maybe next time...Probably not lol. Enjoy an episode full of our usual chaos, where we are in the Throne of Glass world, butt head pets, awesome spouses, not being able to talk properly, and learn about our own stories.

(Gabbie’s version just in case)

We swear we tried to follow an agenda, but you cannot make us conform to a strict script! Maybe next time...Probably not lol. In this episode of Chaos and Cocks, in honor of Pride and Obergefell day, we decided to make a special episode dedicated to our favorite LGBTQ+ rep in books and sharing our own experiences with sexuality and pride. Enjoy an episode full of our usual chaos, some talk about Throne of Glass (again), our butt head pets and awesome spouses, constant brain farts and a special legal lesson with Britt.

I swear we just get worse with each podcast. But in the best way. This week we talked about:

Our pets are assholes

Our spouses are the best

Our ADD is out of control

Lexi almost left the podcast for Rowan

We are not sorry for how we are

Some of us want kids, some of us don’t, and one got to witness a vasectomy.

Then all the awesome LGBTQ talk… So let's get into that!

It's Pride month and we here at Chaos and Cocks have so much pride it gets its own episode! Well, kind of it's own episode. We tried really hard to give it it's own episode, but it's called CHAOS and Cocks for a reason my friends.

First, we got into which of us are part of the community and which of us are allies. We established that Britt, Gabbie, and I are bisexual (loosely), Lexi is just not straight, and Ash is an ally! WE talked about how sexuality labels are words to help describe your experience and shouldn't be placed on too high a pedestal because sexuality is a spectrum, and one word labels can never fully encompass our experiences.

Britt, Gabbie, and I also got more into how our male spouses/partners helped us be okay with our sexuality, and how my husband likes to point out girls he thinks are my type when he's out. Lexi's Chris pops in for a minute to tell us how if he was a woman, him and Lexi would still be together. Oh, and he brought Lexi Taco Bell, so he's just pretty cool in our mind right now.

We also got an amazing legal lesson with Britt to teach us all about Obergefell Day, which is today! For a quick summary:

Obergefell v. Hodges was the SCOTUS case that declared it is unconstitutional to deny same-sex couples the right to marry; quote from case, 5-4 decision issued on June 26, 2015

  • The battle to legalize same-sex marriage began in the US in 1970

  • Lots of back and forth between state legislators and state supreme courts about legalizing gay marriage (supreme courts said it should be permitted and legislators would create laws banning)

  • 1996: Clinton signed the federal Defense of Marriage Act which restricted certain federal rights to heterosexual marriages only; declared unconstitutional by Obama in 2011

  • 2003: Massachusetts becomes first state to legalize gay marriage

  • Nevada banned gay marriage in 2002 and even amended its state constitution to define marriage as between a man and woman only but in 2020 became the first state to include the right for same-sex couples to marry in its constitution

Then, we got into how what we're calling the contemporary conundrum, which is that most LBGTQ books in traditional or even in indie publishing, are in the contemporary genre, and most of us read fantasy here…. There is starting to be more in fantasy, which we get into our favorites later, but there's still so much room for improvement.

We also talk about harmful rep, token LGBTQ characters, and that TikTok. We then got off on a tangent of content warnings, kinkshaming, and how you as a reader are responsible for your own content consumption, but creators are also responsible for making it easy to find those warnings.

We brought it back to the topic at hand by listing our favorite LGBTQ books! I finally remembered the word sapphic, thanks to Britt, and we got started! See our list of recommendations below.
