C&C Episode 8: Chaos and Book Hangovers

Please enjoy the "too long, didn't listen" version for this week's podcast episode! We once again talked way too much!

Hello Smutlings! Do you like your new name? Because we sure do. In this episode of Chaos and Cocks, we discuss how mean Sarah J Mass is and why her books provide us with the worst book hangovers, content warnings and why they’re very necessary for many books. We also cover our bookish pet peeves and catch up with the ladies and their reading habits.

It is necessary for us to provide a big SPOILER WARNING here because we suck at saying spoiler warning before discussing some of our favorites like the Throne of Glass series, the A Court of Thorns and Roses series and the From Blood and Ash series. So to our listeners, be wary of possible spoilers.

We hope you enjoy this once again long episode (what’s new?) and please heed this warning: There is cussing, talk of sex and a mention of a TW for Ice Planet Barbarians.

Once again we are asking you to be ok with our chaos and lack of a plan. At least we have the digest version ready for you below (winky face). Firstly we want to welcome back Britt! It has only been a week but we really really missed her!

The beginning of our chaotic podcast starts with, well, chaos. Gabbie is mad about Gabbie Hanna, Chris (Lexi’s Chris) has extremely low expectations with her reading materials. Please be warned, there is talk about dildo saddles and sleeping with dragons. Our spouses think we’re vagrants who have no sensibility. But we really do, we just like smutty books.

After I goes through my ridiculously long list of books I binged in a span of six days, we realize yet again that we want instant gratification when it comes to our books. If there isn’t p in the v instantly, we don’t want it.

This also brought up the discussion of Discord. We can barely keep our own stuff together but maybe, putting all of our book recs, podcast plans, and sharing our ideas with our twelve listeners will be a good thing? We would like to give it a shot if you would?

Please follow us on IG and let us know!

You will find slight rioting about dick reviewers, false smut claims, being triggered by lack of communication in books, and triggers when there are not enough trigger warnings.

This brought up the thought:

We are liable for our own consumption, but how do we make sure we are fully warned before diving into a book that has zero warnings? The easiest answer, do your own research. Check out goodreads reviews or Storygraphs content warning feature, and message someone who has reviewed the book you are interested in. Ask your bookish besties if they have read it or heard anything. Message the author directly. You may or may not get a quick response but it is an option.

Additionally, make it easy for others to find that info in your own reviews! Mark any content or trigger warnings when you’re writing and posting reviews to make it easy for others to do said research. Be a considerate person! If you don’t personally have any content triggers, that’s fine, but others might, and it’s important to be considerate.

What is to be done about authors who cry wolf about the spice in their book? Sadly, nothing. It seems to be a new thing where an author will claim their book is in a smutty category when there is no explicit sex scenes. Are they turning their books into click bait or does their own spice and smut scale not match your own? I guess we will never know.

Speaking of lack of spice and being cheated… I admit that I’m cheating on the group with a seperate book club. It’s ok though, because I cheats on them too if I’m not into the book of the month.

If you need to learn my mad skills on learning about a book without actually reading it, send me a DM!

I also gave us some insight on other bookish people who’s spice scales are way off from our own. We would love to fix this continuing problem but we haven’t found the solution yet. Sigh.

Now to the sad stuff. Gabbie and Lexi recall their reactions to TOG while the rest of us reminisce on our own reactions back when we first read the series. We would like to say that we do love SJM, even though she is mean and rips our hearts out. Everything said, is said with love and a whole lot of sass. Overall, it was loved so much but hurt so hard. We truly know why the phrase “Who hurt you, and why was it Sarah” is a thing.

JLA was not on the docket but man, we went off! This crew ships the joining, Poppy and Kieran, and we are not afraid to shout it out loud! Or publish it on a podcast. We truly don’t understand how people feel the need to tell authors what should be in their own book. You know, the book the author is giving us and putting their heart and soul into?

Circling back to SJM, Gabbie needs to read Crescent City ASAP! Who doesn’t want to follow up a soul ripping TOG marathon with reading CC? We fully support her and she plans on balancing that hurt with some blue alien cock. She is so close to being ungrounded. Until Brit realized Gabbie and the rest of us had not read Addie LaRue. Oops! We are all close to being grounded now.

Ash continues to sneak smut while her family sleeps and she has once again added a series to our TBR’s. We plan on making a list (eventually) and getting organized. It is being manifested, we just need to get out of our own way and get you all the stuff you have been asking us for!

At the end of this lovely and chaotic podcast, Britt updates us on all her lawerings. She is going to be in and out over the next few weeks but she knows we love and support her. We think we might be able to convince Darac to fill in for her on at least one episode! She also knows we think she is a badass and cannot wait for her to be a lawyer!

We hope you join us on social media and keep telling us what you all want from us! We are here for you :)

You can drop questions in the comments, or message any of us on IG!

This episode is a long one, but we hope you join us for a good time!
